Support for personal computers in student halls

Overview

Student computing

ResNet Student Support Sessions
Students located in the following halls are entitled to network and security support for their own computer equipment:

  • Corfe House
  • Cranborne House
  • Purbeck House
  • Student Village
  • Winterbourne House

This service is offered on a ‘best effort’ basis and offers assistance for the following:

  • Diagnosing general network connectivity issues
  • Diagnosing virus and spyware issues
  • Residential network connection issues
  • Advice on hardware issues.

The time allocated for each visit is 20 minutes. Within this time, investigation and if possible, resolution of the reported issue will take place. If the resolution will take longer than the available time, advice will be given for you to act upon.

This may include advising you to restore the computer to factory settings. Restoring will return the computer to a software state similar to when it was new, dependent upon the manufacturer’s restore application.

The support staff will not install unlicensed software. This includes the installation of ‘shareware’ or ‘free trial’ software which excludes use by educational establishments. You may however be offered advice to install and use these applications (if they are licence free) for personal use.

We do not hold Windows or Apple recovery discs and we cannot supply licenses. Please ensure that you own legitimate copies of the software and that you have the appropriate recovery disks.

No responsibility is accepted by Bournemouth University for the data stored on the computer and all personal data must be backed up before attending the session. Any support offered is only on the basis that all actions are taken at your own risk.

Surgery hours and location are:
