Overview

This page tells you what software is available on Bournemouth University (BU) computers, what to bring with you when you come to BU, and details of discounted software available for students to purchase.

Standard Software

The student PCs at BU run Microsoft Windows 7 with Office 2013 and Adobe CC 2015.

The Apple Macs run OS X El Capitan 10.11 with Microsoft Office 2016 and Adobe CC 2015.

Computers in faculty labs will have the same basic setup, plus additional faculty specific software.

The following software products are installed on all IT Services managed student PCs at BU:

Supported software

IT Services supports the following operating systems on BU owned computers:

  • Microsoft Windows 7
  • Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7

Software to bring with you

As computers can sometimes unexpectedly fail it is recommended that you bring the following items with you when you come to BU:

  • Operating system install media/Manufacturers system recovery media
  • Drivers for additional hardware (graphics cards, printers, scanners, any USB devices etc)
  • Any additional software you require
  • Anti virus software

In addition, please bring the following:

  • Operating system licence details
  • Additional software licence details
  • Warranty agreement and any guarantees

The easiest way to assess what software you need to bring with you is identify what you use regularly.

It is recommended that you backup all of your data on a regular basis, as IT Services cannot recover data from personal or BU computers when they fail.

Free software

Due to the licensing partnership between BU and Microsoft, whilst studying at BU students can now download Office 365 ProPlus for free.

Office 365 ProPlus includes the full suite of Office applications and offers the ability for these to be installed on up to five devices.
